Randolph County, located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, was formed in 1779 from Guilford County and named for Peyton Randolph, the first president of the Continental Congress.

History. The area which eventually became known as Randolph county was originally inhabited by Siouan Native Americans including Saponi and Keyauwee. In the 1700s, European settlers moved into the area, namely Germans, Scotch-Irish, and English, some of whom were Quakers and Moravians.

Later the Keyauwee, Saponi and Tutelo tribes were all found in the region. But even the aboriginal name of Deep River is uncertain; recent writers have referred to it as the "Sapona," but this was the name applied in 1701 to the Yadkin. Indians certainly inhabited the area.
