Companion Vilja - version 4.0 (2024)

Over time Vilja has grown so complex and her dialog has evolved so far that even her creatorscan't keep track of all the features and how to access them. There are many surprises tucked awayin her dialog topics and we encourage you to try them all, but even we sometimes need a guide to find our way through the dialog maze.

1. Travel Together

  • Let's go - and equip your armor - She'll follow you wearing her armor. (only available if she is unarmored)
  • Let's go - you won't need any armor - She'll follow you without donning her armor. (only available if she is armored or in her pyjamas)

    Vilja the follower

We have done our best to make Vilja a good follower who won't spoil your fun. She'll mimic your behavior whenyou sit, sneak, run, and draw your weapon. She won't report your crimes

Vilja is an alchemist and starts the game knowing a few spells. She can heal herself, cure herself of diseases (but not poison), walk on water, breath water, summon her horse, and teleport to various locations. In the course of the game, she will eventually learn more spells, but she'll never become a great mage throwing fireballs at her enemies.

She will automatically switch into armor if combat starts and also automatically switch into a swimming outfit when she enters the water (unless you disable that option).

Vilja should not get lost when following you. She should teleport to your side if she gets separated from you for too long. If she really does get lost, you can use the summoning spell to call her to you.

Vilja is very talkative and will chat with you wherever you go. However, the lip-sync in Oblivion only works when you are facing the talking npc. This means that sometimes, her lip-movement will appear once you turn around and look at her, i.e. she will then appear to be talking but you won't be able to hear anything.

If she complains that you are nude (or that she is), then it's because whatever you are wearing has a totalcost of zero. She can only identify clothing and armor based on it's value. Put on a ring or amulet worth at leastone gold, and the problem will go away.

Sometimes she decides that she wants to go do something else. And very occasionally she will!

  • Lead the way - She will take the lead and expect you to follow to one of many different destinations.
    • Arena, Arboretum, Waterfront, Marketplace, etc. - to other districts when in the Imperial City
    • Guildhalls, Bookshops, Smiths, Inns, etc. to her favorite shops and points of interest in each city
    • Pleasant Places and Dungeons - to nearby caves, villages, shrines, and other interesting places
    • One of her favorite places - to Aleswell, waterfalls near Cheydinhal, and similar places
    • One of my favorite places - to a place you've shown her (see the About this place topic), you can also have her remind you about where they are by showing them on the map
    • A surprise location - to a randomly selected spot that could be on the other side of the map!
    • I'm lost! - to a preset meeting spot (see the About this place topic)
    • Anvil, Chorrol, Leyawiin, etc. - to any one of the major cities
    • Home - to your home, assuming she knows where that is (see the About this place topic)

    Vilja the leader

It's a very different experience to be able to travel side by side with yourcompanion instead of having her trailing along behind you. It's great for roleplayand can even be practical to let her take the lead if you get lost.

This feature can be a lot of fun or a great source of frustration, sometimes bothat the same time. So here are some helpful hints for making the most of the experience.

She will occasionally ask to take the lead, but if you are in the middle of a quest or just don't feel like it you don't have to let her. You can also say yes, and then tell her that you need to take over for a little while but you'll let her lead when you are done.

Her default speed is a "dynamic walk" and she will try to stay a few steps ahead of you. If you start to move faster, she will speed up the tempo to stay ahead. You asked her to lead and that's what she'll try to do, but she will wait for you if you fall behind.

As she will remind you, she doesn't get lost. But there are places, especially in the northern mountains, near water, and in some interior cells, where she might have difficulties and choose a long, inefficient route to her destination. She doesn't really see the game world, but follows invisible path grids instead. Mods frequently make changes to the game world without modifying those path grids, so be patient when she starts trying to walk through rocks and buildings. You can always ask her to stop if she seems stuck, or you temporarily take the lead to get her through the area causing a problem.

You can ask her to hurry up and she'll break into a run. But that makes it even more likely she'll get confused and take a wrong turn, so you'll probably want to save it for when you're traveling on the roads between cities.

You can also ask her to slow down. That lets you walk side-by-side with her, whichis very nice if you are roleplaying a romance or just wanting to take a slower stroll through the countryside using the third-person view.

If she summons Bruse, you'll know that she plans to travel a fairly long distance. And if ask her were she's going, she'll show you the destination she has chosen on your map (with the Vilja quest active). But it can be fun to let it be a true surprise.

  • About this place. - several topics related to your current location:
    • Tell me your thoughts on this place. - Although she probably already has. :)
    • Remember this place if we get lost - She might lead you back to this spot later if you ask nicely
    • If we need to split up we meet here. - She'll Mark the location so she can teleport here later
    • This is our new home. she'll consider this her home and refer to it as such. (available only in interiors)
    • This is your bed. - If your house has multiple rooms, you can show her which is the bedroom. (available only in interiors) (Note: She'll get lost if there are other rooms between the home and bedroom locations.)
    • Remove your bedroll, please. - This is only available at night and when she's using her bedroll (she automatically puts it away during the day)
    • Your horse can stable here. - Bruse can use a stable near your house (only available when riding)
    • This is a nice place to wander. - Vilja likes to go for an afternoon stroll (when it's not raining) either in a city or in a country garden. (only available in exteriors and keep it fairly close to your home)
    • This is my favorite place 1/2/3 - Tell Vilja about your three favorite places and she'll remember them. She'll be able to lead you to them or point them out to you on the map.
  • We need to separate for a while. - first you'll tell her how long you'll be away and then where she should wait:
    • Guard this spot, please - She will stand guard (wearing armor) and not wander around
    • Stand watch here, please - She will stand around waiting for you to return (without armor)
    • Relax here until I return - She will go through a daily routine, even wandering to nearby locations
    • I need to be alone, stay at home. - She'll teleport home (if you're not already there) and then start her wandering daily routine.
    • Teleport to our meeting point - You will need to set this using the About this place topic.
    • Meet me in Anvil/Bravil/etc. - She will teleport to the city of your choice and can usually be found in the local fighters guild hall.
    • Meet me at my favorite place 1/2/3 - She will teleport to your favorite place (see About this place)

    Her Daily Routine

If you've told Vilja to relax, she'll go through a daily routine of activities that varies depending on her current location and even the weather.

She likes to sleep from 1am to 6am. If she's in a location without a bed and you are around she make ask if you have a suggestion about where she can sleep. You could choose to lead her to another room, just tell her no, or help her find a good spot to use her bedroll.

For Vilja to use a bed it has to be completely unowned. She can use the beds in the Mages and Fighters Guilds, in some player owned houses, and in many houses added by modders, but not the beds in the various inns. One option is simply to not tell her to relax if you're going to stay in an inn because if she's following she'll stand guard over you instead.

Vilja's choice of beds and chairs to use seems to be somewhat random. So don't be surprised if she's standing next to a perfectly good chair or bed and then walks across the room or to the other side of the city to find one she likes better.

  • How about a nap before we continue? - Useful if you want her to sleep during the day, but she won't be interested in a nap in the evenings
  • Are you hungry? - Sometimes she is and sometimes she isn't. Sometimes she's thirsty instead.
  • Let's sit down? - If you sit first, she might choose a chair on the other side of the room. So use this and after she sits you can sit near her.

    Vilja's Wants vs. Needs

Vilja is not intended to be a high maintenance companion and really only has a few needs.

    1. You will need to repair her armor and weapons. (Unless you want to use the "Companion Master" mod to teach her how to repair them herself.)
    2. To complete her quests, you'll sometimes have to travel with her and help her find various items.
    3. You'll need to not make her too mad at you. If you choose the romance option, you'll want to get her disposition to 100, but 90 is good enough if you're just friends.

But Vilja also has a personality and for roleplay purposes there are a number of things she wants and that you can give to her. The actual list is too long to provide here, but keep in mind that if you stopped to give her a bottle of wine every time she mentions being thirsty she would probably be too drunk to walk. There's no excuse to not give her a bottle occasionally but don't take all of her idle chatter too seriously. If she really wants a drink she just might go get one for herself.

You can use can use the skill report to see her current disposition and learn which of her requests are just idle chatter, which are minor requests, and which are really important to her. But here's one hint: If you have 2 million or moregold, you better give her a pretty big shopping allowance when she asks, but if you're poor she'll be much more understanding if you say no.

2. Let's talk fighting strategy

  • Use melee weapons and get in close. - She's equally good with both blunt and bladed weapons.
  • Use ranged weapons and stay back. - She's not as good with a bow and will switch to melee if enemies get to close to her
  • Attack any enemy upon sight - She'll be like other companions, aggressive and just waiting for a fight.
  • Let's avoid fighting - She'll try to hold back and be passive, but will still defend herself, Bruse, and you.
  • Only attack enemies that attack us - She won't usually start the fight, but will quickly join in. (default)
  • Regarding your spellcasting - Vilja isn't a mage but over time she learns some useful combat spells
    • Use all your spells. - Despite the name, this only affects her combat-oriented spells (and not healing)
    • Don't use any spells. - After she learns to use combat-oriented spells you might decide there are times she shouldn't use them
    • Let me look over your spells list. - You can then choose which specific spells she will and won't use (Bound helm obscures her beautiful face, but it does protect it. Which will you choose?)
    • Stop healing me during combat. - She can focus on attacking the enemies instead.
    • Keep me healed during combat - Divides her attention between healing and attacking the enemies.
    • Stop healing me outside combat. - Trying to raise your restoration skill? Then you'll love this option.
    • Keep me healed outside combat - It doesn't matter if you are fighting, if she isn't then she'll try to keep you healthy.
  • Let's practice our fighting skills. - Allows you to spar with her, but try not do it around other people. Note that her performance is related to your game settings - the higher your difficulty setting is, the harder it will be to beat her. Sparring will end if you activate her, yield, or if either of you gets down to 50% health.

    Combat Notes

Enemies will usually attack you instead of Vilja, except for some added by mods. Not only is it insulting when enemies run past the player to get to a companion, it's a nuisance when you want to level up your combat and armor skills. So we've attempted to make you feellike the hero again by letting the enemies focus their attention on you.

Vilja, like all NPCs and companions, is affected by an Oblivion bug which makes her forget to use arrows when firing a bow.You can cast the Vilja Summon spell to give her instructions during combat. If you have her switch to melee and then back to ranged fighting it will usually (but not always) make her start using arrows again.

    • In her default defensive mode ("Only attack enemies that attack us") she will not engage in combat until:
      • she is directly attacked by an enemy OR
      • you cast the Vilja Start Combat spell on an enemy OR
      • enemies attack and you raise your weapon OR
      • you have taken a few hits from an enemy (i.e. you have started to take damage).

So you can gladly run past wild animals and sneak past enemieswithout fear that she will charge ahead and ruin your plans. However, if you are injured after a battle and don't heal yourself beforecontinuing, she will get protective and rush in to defend you against anypotential threat. So, if you want her to obey your orders on a long termbasis, don't run around injured.

If you like to play stealthy, this setting should be excellent. She willnever attack enemies that haven't spotted you, and I have been sneaking myway through whole dungeons, without Vilja acting up at all.

If you play as a mage and want her to be your tank whileyou attack with spells from a distance. You might want to carry a weapon you can raise as an 'attack-signal', although it will also work to simplyraise your fists.

    • Her aggressive mode ("Attack any enemy upon sight.") shouldn't need any further explanation :P. You get the traditional Oblivion companion behaviour and a Vilja that is happy to bash everything from rats to daedras. You can signal her to choose a particular opponent using the Vilja Start Combat spell.
    • Her passive mode ("Let's avoid fighting.") is designed for peoplewho feel companions unbalance the game or spoil the fun by robbing theplayer of a chance to be the hero.

With this setting Vilja will almost never fight, and enemies are very unlikely to attack her. She'll even try to stay a little farther away when combat starts so she's not in the way.

There are still three things that will make her disobey your orders and join in the fight.

      • You can cast the Vilja Start Combat spell on an enemy to make her attack.
      • If she is directly attacked by an enemy, then she will defend herself.
      • If someone attacks her horse Bruse, she will rush in to defend him. Don't blame her for that. It's her horse and she loves him dearly. She will sometimes also come to the aid of other companions.
      • If your health is so low that she fears you will die very soon, then she will rush in to rescue you - after all, she is your loyal friend, and as such she couldn't just stand there and watch you dying, could she? If you don't heal yourself after combat, she'll continue to be more aggressive than you might want, but realistically, why would anyone follow orders from someone who hasn't got enough sense to take a healing potion instead of running around half dead?

You can interact with Vilja during combat and give her new instructions, either by initiating dialog with her or by casting the Vilja Summon spell, whichwill bring up a menu with various options (switch ranged/melee, stop fighting, heal me, etc.).

If she gets disarmed during combat she'll try to find her weapon after the fight is over. And if you lose your weapon you can always ask her to help you find it.

3. I could use your help...

  • Look around for ingredients - What's more natural than asking an alchemist to search for ingredients?
  • Look around for arrows - After combat arrows can be difficult to find, but Vilja has a talent for it.
  • Look around for weapons - She'll automatically look around if she gets disarmed during combat, but you can ask her to pick up the dropped enemy weapons too. (Or maybe you were the one who was disarmed.)
  • I need a repair hammer! - She has a never-ending supply of hammers, which is nice since she also seems to enjoy breaking her armor and can't repair it herself.
  • I need a lockpick! - She'll sell you some of these. Maybe that's her way to hint she doesn't think you should be breaking into people's houses.
  • Can you make a potion for me? - She's an alchemist but not very talented so don't expect miracles. But it's nice to make her feel needed and she does eventually get a little better with help from her sister.
    • Restore Health, Magicka, and Fatigue - You'll need to provide an appropriate ingredient.
    • Cure Disease and Poison - You provide an ingredient, but at least they are standard potions.
    • Which ingredients can you use? - She'll tell you what she needs for each type of potion.
    • Restore Attributes - After completing a quest she'll learn to make Restore Luck, and similar potions.
    • Feather - She's rather proud of this one, so be polite and take it without commenting.
  • Use a torch when it is dark. - She has an infinite supply of them if needed.
  • Stop using a torch when it is dark. - Sometimes you want to sneak around, and sometimes you just get tired of that torch noise.
  • Regarding your healing abilities - After she learns how to heal you, you can decide whether she should.
  • This area needs gardening. - She'll rake the area until you tell her to stop. (for roleplaying, only outdoors)
  • Clean up the mess, please - She'll sweep the floor or ground. (for roleplaying purposes and only if you have Shivering Isles installed)
  • Would you make me a new outfit? - Over the next few days she will sew you a modest outfit if you give her some cloth. (for roleplaying purposes)
  • Could you do some shopping? - She likes this one, but it's going to cost you 300 gold. You can request arrows, ingredients, or potions, or just let her pick out whatever she likes (clothing, jewelry, armor, etc.). She'll either walk or teleport to a shop and you can meet her there later. This is mostly for roleplaying and she will choose (within the category you specify) what she thinks is most appropriate. Occasionally she finds something valuable, but don't be surprised if she spends thewhole amount on a crate of strawberries.
  • Read a book for me. - Brings up a list of books that she can read aloud for you. (only available at home)

4. Let's just talk for a little while

  • Tell me about yourself. - Over time she will reveal more and more of her background. If you've told her to stay quiet or were busy when she tried to tell you something, you can come here to learn about her.
  • Tell me your thoughts. - She'll share more of her observations about life in Tamriel.
  • Tell me your thoughts on this place. - These comments are specific to your current location.
  • What should we do next? - If you get bored, maybe she'll have a good suggestion.
  • You and I - Topics in this group evolve over time and might not be available at all times and locations.
    • Is there anything I could do for you? - Is she mad at you? You can give her strawberries, sweet rolls, and sweet cakes to improve her disposition towards you.
    • I love you. - You'll need to activate the romance option to get access to this one, and it still won't be available right away.
    • I want to thank you. - Only for roleplaying purposes - although rarely you might gain or lose a disposition point.
    • You look very pretty today. - Only available when you have known Vilja for some time. Might randomly raise her disposition towards you - but might also lower her disposition if you are unlucky!
    • Our companionship. - Makes her bring up her own thoughts on your companionship, which sometimes can improve (or damage) her disposition towards you (depending on your responses).
    • I have a gift for you. - Only for roleplaying. Will bring up Vilja's inventory and allow you to add/remove things. Might occasionally give you an extra disposition point.
    • Would you like to go swimming? - Only available when you are outdoors (or at home). Note that Vilja won't wander off to swim on her own - you'll have to lead the way (because of game limitations). You need to let her talk while you are swimming!
    • Let's play a game - Will allow you to play some games with her, as well as allow you to spar with her.
    • How about a cozy evening at home? - Allows you to arrange a nice supper at home together with her. Be aware that she won't forget about your promise! (You can cancel the supper from this topic as well). Only available after Melinda is out of prison and if you haven't already decided on an evening out. You need to let her talk during the meal!
    • Let's dine out tonight. - Allows you to take Vilja to a nice inn for the evening. Be aware that she won't forget about your promise! (You can cancel theevening out from this topic as well). Only available after Melinda is out of prison and if you haven't already decided on supper at home. You need to let her talk during the meal!

    Romance and Friendship

The option to romance Vilja has been requested since version 1, and now it is finally here. She can romance both male and female player characters, and will occasionally confirm in dialog that she is aware of which gender your character has.

However, our intention has never been to make her a "romance companion". Therefore, the romance is highly optional - in fact, you must choose the romance option in her Options Menu book before anything will happen. It will then be Vilja who triggers the romance, you'll just have to wait. And if you have just added her as a companion, you will have to wait for quite some time. Only some time after the first questline has been finished and the second has started will things start to happen.

Do not expect any "adult content"! This mod includes no more "adult content" than Disney's cartoon version of Snow White!

  • Tell me about your mission. - Only available when she has something to tell you about her current quest. A good place to look if you want her to repeat information!
  • Why are you so quiet? - If you asked her to be quiet, you'll need to tell her when it's OK to talk again.
  • Could you please stop talking! - Use for some quiet to explore a dungeon or listen for something.

    Vilja the chatterbox

Vilja does love to talk, but even she knows that it's good to be quiet some of the time. She will stop talking entirely in certain places and during certain quests. (For example, she'll be quiet through most of the end of the main quest because there many conversations by other NPCs that you will want to hear.)

She'll talk less often while you are sneaking, but she will still talk. If that bothers you, then just ask her to be quiet. In that case she really will understand.

You can also just alter how often she makes her comments. By default it's about every 30 seconds, but you can change that with the Options Menu book.

  • About my other companion... - You can introduce other companions and get her opinion about them.

    Other Companions

Having companions from different mods interacting with each other can be fun.

You can introduce Vilja to any of your followers and she will recognize them is fellow companions. She can even make small talk with and about specific uniquecompanions, recognizing them as individuals. However, Vilja won't recognize any ofthe companions until you have properly introduced them.

The specific companions she can recognize by name so far are: Fergus, Ruin (works only partially as this mod is using a different dialog-setup), Neeshka, Rhianna, Arren, Stoker Wolff, Viconia, Saerileth, Sonia, Valeria, Vincente, Ramy, CM Partner Valtierro and the Adoring Fan, Mazoga and Eyja (works with both modded versions of them and the original npcs).

To introduce a companion either choose a specific companion name or the generic "my partner" option. She will then prompt you to introduce her to the other companion as well (i.e. you have to talk to the companions). After this, the introduction is finished and Vilja will 'know' your mutual friend.

If you make any mistake when introducing a companion, the introduction can be undone in the same topic. Just tell Vilja that you made a mistake, and then tell the other npc.

Vilja will know if a companion has died. But if you have removed a companion mod from your game, you may need to go to Vilja's Options Menu book and mark which companion should not be around any more.

Once you have introduced companions to her, they will (in most cases) get an extra dialog topic"Other Companion: Guidance" which allows you to ask them to do some of the things Vilja can do. But not all of the features work well with all of the other companions. For example, the CM Partnercompanions will teleport back to your side instead of following Vilja properly.

5. Let me check your gear

This brings up her inventory, where you can give or take equipment from her. Activating her while sneaking (or holding the Grab key if you use OBSE) will alsoaccess her inventory and you won't be pickpocketing her.

Vilja has extra storage containers which you can access from her main inventory screen.

  • Pyjamas Bag - Place the outfit you want her to wear when she is sleeping in this bag. (Obviously, you can also simply remove her original modest robe without replacing it.)
  • Red and Blue Extra Storage Bags - These allow you to give her items to carry without worrying that she might try to use them. They are great for spare potions, armor, or weapons that you don't want her to use. Or maybe you just want to organize the things you ask her to carry for you.

At any moment she'll only agree to wear armor or normal clothing. It's very rare that she chooses to wear some of each. If what looks like clothing acts like protective armor, then it's armor. If an enchanted ring or amulet has a combat-oriented enchantment it will usually only get equipped when she's wearing armor and vice versa. And rings in the game come in left and right hand styles. While the player can wear them on either hand, NPCs are bound by the ring's hand designation. So if you want her to wear two rings, you'll need to find one of each type.

Vilja does not repair her own armor and weapons, but you can use the "Companion Master" modto teach her that ability.

6. How are your skills progressing?

This brings up a report where you see her current skills, attributes, armor rating, health, disposition, etc. Base values are only shown if the current attribute is different.

Vilja is an alchemist and gains skills based on her profession rather than improvingspecific skills through training. As the player gains levels, Vilja will also but remain three levels behind.

Options Menu

Vilja has some optional features that you can configure in the game by selectingher Options Menu book that appears a the top of the skill report.

From the book you can decide if she:

  • will be essential or non-essential,
  • has an encumbrance limit like the player or can carry an unlimited amount of gear,
  • can sell you lockpicks and provide repair hammers,
  • should forget about some other companion (in case you've uninstalled that mod), and
  • should make her comments approximately every 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 1.5 minutes.

You also have the ability to choose:

  • how much of a health bonus she gets (to account for various difficulty settings and game overhauls),
  • which swimsuit she'll wear when swimming (if any) to support many popular body mods (BAB, HGEC, Robert's), and
  • if the new romance storyline should be turned on.

By default, she is non-essential, will get encumbered, sells lockpicks, provides repair hammers, is somewhat more hardy than the typical NPC, comments on quests about every 30 seconds, uses a white swimsuit based on Robert's female body, and is not interested in you as a romantic partner.

Quick commands:

These items are at the bottom of her dialog options, but only when they would make sense.

Get off that horse, please - Useful if she starts riding some horse other than Bruse (If she's riding Bruse, you can just activate Bruse to get her to dismount.)

Let's go - She'll start following you (you'll need to use the choices under Travel together to switch between armor and weapons)

Let's sit down - Make her sit down if there is an appropriate chair in the neighborhood. This has been added for roleplay-purpose; you can sit down once she is seated and thereby sit next to her.

Wait right here, please - Equivalent to guard and stand watch from the Travel together topic.

Want to relax here for a while? - She will go through a daily routine, possibly wandering to other nearby locations. If you're going to be away for a long time you should probably use the separation choice on the Travel together topic instead.

Why don't you ride? - She can ride while you walk. She'll summon Bruse if needed. (If Bruse is nearby, you can activate him to get her to mount. In Shivering Isles and modded world spaces, she can ride with you but not if you are walking.)

In cases of emergency...

We have made our best to make Vilja function as flawlessly as possible. However,it is a mod in a game world where many of you are using hundreds of mods together. And realistically, there must be situations we haven't foreseen that you might run into.

Therefore, we have built in "emergency-solutions for you". These are included inVilja's Start Combat spell (which you normally use to help her pick a combat-target).

If you cast the Start Combat spell on Vilja herself you will get a new menu, where you canreset her temporary variables and animation. It should sort out most kinds of issues with her.

You can do the same with Bruse and Wolfgang if they should begin acting oddly.

A time-honored way to resolve NPC problems is to leave them in some interior cell, thengo somewhere else and wait for at least 72 game hours. When you go back, that just mighthave resolved whatever problem you were having.

If you for some reason still decide that you have to uninstall and reinstall the mod,the Start Combat spell will help you to upgrade Vilja's storyline to approximately where youwere before you uninstalled. In this case, you'll have to cast the combat spell not on Vilja buton the Dunmer witch Heneri in Cheydinhal (you'll find her either in the Cheydinhal Bridge Innor strolling in the towncentre). If you haven't met Heneri yet, you haven't gotten far enough intoher first quest to worry about using this option.

And don't forget to read through the section of the ReadMe file to make sure you're not experience a known problem or conflict that has a simple solution.
